Blog It Forward: Inspiration

February 17, 2010

So, I hopped onto Twitter one night when I saw Victoria of sfgirlbybay.com tweeting about starting up a project to inspire fellow bloggers. She was essentially asking for help fleshing out her idea, which in my perspective seemed to be about drawing upon a pool of design blogging types to share/swap their smarts. Long story short, the crowdsourcing worked and it all eventually gelled into the Blog It Forward plan.

I joined the project and now it’s my turn now to tell you what inspires me. In a word: risk. In more words, it’s that thing in your gut that says fight or fly.

I’ve always been a fan of risks and the people that take them. Like moving from NYC to the country and “adopting” a Coyote. (Shreve Stockton) Eating a fried Cicada. Chucking the rules of fashion. (Alexander McQueen) Breaking up with the “perfect on paper” significant other. Quitting a lucrative job to start your own businesses. (Lisa Congdon) Or moving to Korea fresh out of college to teach English. (My cousin)

That said, I am not your girl if you want to bungee jump or something. But, I am game if you want to join forces to throw a vintage market with only gumption on our side. Or how about putting my apartment up for review by the critical masses.

In short, if it scares me it’s probably because I really want it deep down in my parts. When posed with a scary challenge or option, I often ask myself: If I fail, will this matter in a day, a year, five years… It’s all about whether my effort and the result (good or bad) will matter for that long to the outside world. Or debilitate my everyday for always. And usually, the answer is: I don’t think so. or Not really.

This, my friends, is why I try as much as I can. Thinking through pros, cons, and searching for people who are ok with some risky business. I mean the best stuff happens when you just try. Don’t be scared that you’ll look silly.

Or go ahead be scared, but don’t let it stop you. Just let it inspire you. Either way, you’ll have a story to tell afterward. A Life of My Own is up next! Can’t wait to see what Trishna has up her sleeve

awesome you. i really agree. although not sure i always live by this. it’s a good reminder. even the crap that i’ve been scared of and done anyway and then failed and made me cringe after ain’t so frickin bad. you gotta live your life. even that cringe stuff makes you feel you are living your life.

I love this! I agree with you so much. I am looking at my magnet in my studio right now that says “What would you do today if you knew you could not fail?”.
    Cheers! Jen
